Patrick & Myles Pick: {P}: So I figured instead of Myles and myself fighting each month with who gets to pick IDW’s “Jem and the Holograms” by Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell as their favorite comics, I would provide a place for us to settle our differences, and both gush over it. Issue #6 is on your comic book stands this week and we get what we’ve been waiting for this entire series: vehicles shaped liked musical instruments (and now a no spoilers review besides that major spoiler). {M} Yeah, I could not get over those designs at all. SO…

Myles: As I mentioned last month, IDW Publishing‘s Godzilla in Hell is a conceptual dream come true. My concern was as great as this concept was, the risk of it slipping into simple novelty with the subsequent issues would run high. But the fine folks at IDW retain the concept’s freshness, aided in part by their novel approach to the series: having a different creator craft each individual issue that chronicles Godzilla’s trek through various levels or domains of Hell. Noted sci-fi/fantasy/horror artist, Bob Eggleton, takes over the writing and artistic duties for Godzilla in Hell #2 to astounding results. Unlike…

Myles: Archie vs Predator #4 It always had to end like this. No story detailing a clash between the denizens Riverdale and the Predator could sing its swan song without coming down to a battle between the alien menace and the dynamic duo of Betty and Veronica. Alex de Campi revs the story into full Grindhouse mode with her art team of Fernando Ruiz, Rich Koslowski,  and Jason Millet. Throughout the 4 issue run, Archie vs Predator has been a treasure trove of glorious insanity, and the finale sticks the landing in spades. De Campi’s maniacal writing consistently stayed true to Archie’s…

Patrick: In the third installment of Dark Horse comic’s “Archie vs. Predator” things take a turn from worse to absolutely abysmal for the residents of Riverdale. A teenage predator is on the loose, and hunting and murdering Archie’s gang of pals one by one, or as we saw in the last issue, in a giant group.  Series writer Alex De Campi promised some ridiculous over the top moments in this book, and she has delivered so far in spades. This series has not held a lot of punches as characters have been killed left and right, and this issue is…

Patrick: Harrow County #2 The great and frustrating thing about writing and reviewing comics alongside Myles and Drew each week is that we read and enjoy a lot of the same books. This week was no different in that one of our favorite new titles came up and we knew only one of us could review it. I called the proverbial ‘dibs’ on Dark Horse Comics “HARROW COUNTY” #2 by Cullen Bunn and art by Tyler Crook. Just last month we spoke with Cullen Bunn about the series on the podcast, and drilled down further into the history of “Haints”…

Myles:  Archie’s brand renaissance continues this week with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #3 by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Robert Hack, and Jack Morelli. As with Afterlife With Archie, this book is set in a darker world than what longtime residents of Riverdale are used to. However, unlike Afterlife with Archie or the zany insanity of Archie vs Predator, there’s not an ounce of novelty here.  That’s no slight to either previously mentioned title, but what the creative team has done here is taken the stripped-down concept of Sabrina as a teenage witch who lives with her aunts (and yes, Salem, the…

I gotta say, I’m pretty proud of us for actually seeing through this commitment for a weekly comic blog post. This makes two in a row! One more, and it’s called a streak! Egads! So what did we love in the wonderful world of comics this week? Myles: Horror comics are tough. Heck, horror fiction is tough. But when you’re working in a visual medium that doesn’t move, you can’t rely on the jump-scare in the same way a cheap film can. Many horror comics huddle close to excessive violence and gore, and that’s fine, but it doesn’t unnerve me.…
