Myles:   It feels like #6 just came out, but I will not complain in the slightest about more Jem! Jem and the Holograms #7 sees artist Sophie Campbell taking a breather and handing the reins over to Emma Vieceli. Transitioning artists can sometimes feel awkward for readers, but Vieceli arrives flawlessly. Though her personal style is different, Vieceli is just as gifted with emotive expressions as her predecessor, which has been consistently one of the shining characteristics of the book. Her panels are filled with character interactions, creating a constantly flow of movement on the page. I’m so happy M.…

Patrick & Myles Pick: {P}: So I figured instead of Myles and myself fighting each month with who gets to pick IDW’s “Jem and the Holograms” by Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell as their favorite comics, I would provide a place for us to settle our differences, and both gush over it. Issue #6 is on your comic book stands this week and we get what we’ve been waiting for this entire series: vehicles shaped liked musical instruments (and now a no spoilers review besides that major spoiler). {M} Yeah, I could not get over those designs at all. SO…

Myles: As I mentioned last month, IDW Publishing‘s Godzilla in Hell is a conceptual dream come true. My concern was as great as this concept was, the risk of it slipping into simple novelty with the subsequent issues would run high. But the fine folks at IDW retain the concept’s freshness, aided in part by their novel approach to the series: having a different creator craft each individual issue that chronicles Godzilla’s trek through various levels or domains of Hell. Noted sci-fi/fantasy/horror artist, Bob Eggleton, takes over the writing and artistic duties for Godzilla in Hell #2 to astounding results. Unlike…

Patrick: My pick this week is the penultimate issue in the first arc of IDW’s “Jem and the Holograms #5” written by Kelly Thompson and art by Sophie Campbell. I guess in retrospect I enjoyed the previous issues, but this one really stood out, as we got multiple plot threads and a lot of the action coming to a crescendo. The slow play of the duality of Jerrica/Jem identity catching up with her, and the star-crossed love story between Kimber and Stormer moving along, this issue has a whole lot of great moments. So much happens in this issue that…

Patrick: My pick this week is a new comic from a familiar creator that we have spoken about on the podcast. “Mercury Heat” #1 from Avatar Press Inc, written by Keiron Gillen and art by Omar Francia is out today. Gillen you know from books like cult classic ‘Phonogram’ and the smash hit ‘The Wicked + The Divine’ both from Image comics. We’ve talked on the podcast about the excellent character building and dialogue he brings to Marvel books as well, particularly (my favorite) his run on ‘Young Avengers’. So it was really his name that made me pick this issue off the rack…

Myles: To the surprise of no one, my pick this week is Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell’s Jem and the Holograms #4. It’s been no secret how much I love the property and this comic, but Thompson and Campbell continue to outdo themselves with each subsequent issue. Thompson’s pacing continues to be one of my favorite aspects of this book. Each story beat moves along nicely, but she’s taking her time developing the characters, their relationships and the “origin story” of Jem and the Holograms. The whole of the first arc is feeling like an hour-long pilot episode as opposed trying…
